Valeria Giliberti of the InfraRed Spectroscopy Group wins the Young Scientist Award of the Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Wave Society
Congratulations to our colleague Valeria Giliberti of the InfraRed Spectroscopy (IRS) Group for winning the prestigeous “Young Scientist Award” of the international IR, mm and THz wave (IRMMW-THz) society, awarded at TU Delft (The Netherlands) during the 47th International Conference on Infrared Millimeter and Terahertz Waves, with more than 600 in-person attendees from all over the world. The 2023 prize was awarded to Valeria Giliberti “for important breakthroughs in the domain of biophysical research with infrared near-field techniques”.
In her research at the Center for Life Neuro & Nano Sciences (Joint Lab between Sapienza University of Rome and Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia), Valeria uses a sophisticated infrared nano-spectrometer (NanoIR) to study protein conformational changes at the nanoscale, pathologic protein aggregation and other biophysics problems, in close collaboration with the IRS Group of our Department.
The IRS group has installed and manages the advanced Quantum Cascade Laser source that is necessary for the NanoIR spectrometer to operate well beyond the diffraction limit, close to the single-molecule spectroscopy limit. About the Award In 2016 the IRMMW-THz Society Board voted to institute a Young Scientist Award to recognize interdisciplinary, outstanding scientific work by a young scientist who has made innovative contributions and discoveries in the field of infrared, millimeter, and Terahertz waves. At each annual meeting of the Conference, the Young Scientist Award Committee meets to evaluate the applications that have been submitted and elects the recipient of the Prize for the following year.
The Award recipient will be invited to deliver a keynote presentation to the IRMMW-THz Conference following the selection.
